Hispanic Heritage Month

We are celebrating our Hispanic and Latino athletes all month long in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month which starts on September 15th and will last until October 15th. Want to know why it starts on the 15th? Read on below about the month-long celebration and learn why it’s important! Join the celebration by using our great resources, like the Zoom Backgrounds!

The Facts

Hispanic Heritage Month began as a week of remembrance when it was introduced by California Congressman George E. Brown in June of 1968.

In September of 1968, Congress passed a Public Law which authorized and requested the President to issue annual proclamations that declare that September 15 and 16 marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Week

From 1968 until 1988, each president released a yearly proclamation to honor Hispanic Americans for one week. Until 1987, when the U.S. Representative Esteban E. Torres of California proposed extending the celebration to cover a 31-day period instead of a week so that the nation could “properly observe and coordinate events and activities to  Hispanic culture and achievement.”

On September 14, 1989, President George H.W. Bush chose to extend the annual week to a 31-day period from September 15th to October 15th as National Hispanic Heritage Month.

September 15th was selected as the first day of the celebration because it coincides with the Independence Day of five countries’ independence from Spain in 1821. These countries were: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
