Stress Awareness Month

Stress Awareness Month happens each year in April and shows the importance of being able to manage stress, especially when we don’t always notice it’s happening to us. Stress can be tiring and can cause health problems, which is why it’s so important to have knowledge on recognizing when stress begins to appear and cause problems in our lives.

What Exactly is Stress?

Stress is a normal human body reaction that happens to everyone. When you experience changes or challenges, your body produces physical and mental responses. It is possible to experience positive stress, which can keep us motivated. However, too much stress is never a good thing for our bodies and becomes a problem when the stress continues for a long period of time without any relaxation. 


The Facts

Stress Awareness Month is important because it reminds us to pay attention to our health because everybody experiences stress at some point in our life. Some signs of stress include:

  • Aches and pains (headache)
  • Chest pain or feeling like your heart is racing
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Exhaustion
  • Dizziness
  • Shaking
  • High blood pressure
  • Tight muscles (such as your jaw)
  • Stomach problems
  • Weak immune system
  • Low energy

Ways to manage stress:

  • Exercise- A short walk can boost your energy and mood
  • Staying positive!
  • Deep breathing
  • Eating a well balanced diet
  • Taking a break- Practice some meditation or yoga, listen to your favorite type of music, or spend some time in nature
  • Stretching & relaxing your muscles
  • Make time for your hobbies
