Athlete Leadership Council Summary

Saturday, October 25th, 2022

The Special Olympics Maryland Athlete Input Council held our Fall Meeting over Zoom on Saturday, October 25th, 2022.  The meeting began at 6:31 pm with 13 out of the 18 athlete members in attendance.  Chairperson, Adam Hays started the meeting by asking if there were any interesting Athlete Leadership activities the ALC members were involved in since we last met.  David Godoy shared that the Athlete Stewardship team made over 500 phone calls receiving very grateful feedback from our volunteers by just saying thank you.  Elaina Camacho said that she is participating in the Super Plunge again and held a Bingo fundraiser with the Bingo World team; she also gave her Athlete Leadership trading card to the CEO of Cubik, her new employer. Adam shared that he and Jason are currently working with the University of Maryland Medical System looking to create courses for medical students on how to interact with people with intellectual disabilities through better bedside/chairside manners. He said they are working with Dental, Public Health, and the School of Social Work.

After a motivational quote from David Godoy, the Council went into Old Business following up on the Athlete Leadership Hall of Fame.  We concluded that we would like to have rolling nominations (applications kept on file from year to year) as opposed to reapplying.  The second half of this vote was about how many years we keep the applications on file before nominees have to reapply. This resulted in a tie for 2 or 5 years.  We voted again with the result of keeping applications for 2 years.  Jason said as an action item, he would report back with the next steps.

We then moved on to our New Business.  Adam shared a topic about What to Do Onsite at the Plunge, sent to us by Jessie Hayes, Vice-President of Development. We talked about what we could do on-site for the Plunge, and what we liked and did not like about the Plunge.  Finally, Jason shared with us information about the return of the Athlete Leadership Cruise aboard the Carnival Pride in September 2023.

Secretary, Monique Matthews reminded everyone about our next Athlete Leadership Council meeting and Holiday Party on Saturday, December 3rd.  Finally, Adam ended the meeting at 8:02 pm.

We can’t wait to see what 2023 has in store for the Athlete Leadership Council!
