A Message from the President & CEO: 2023 Quarter 1

I am excited to share that the 2023 Plunge was an incredible success and if you plunged you can take pride in knowing that you helped us surpass our goal of $3.5m as we raised $3,599,841.55. The event reflects the transformative power of our athletes to inspire people like you to support them and our mission. The Plunge serves as an exceptional example of what it means to build interactive inclusive communities of dignity and respect. Support from plungers and donors supporting plungers reflects the very best of all Marylanders in our collective efforts to build a more inclusive Maryland.

As you know, our athletes train and compete free of charge, so the funds raised from the Plunge are critical to ensure that we deliver those year-round opportunities in 27 sports to our athletes. Raising awareness through the Plunge is equally important as experiencing inclusion with our athletes connects the Plunge to the mission and ultimately motivates incredible support from people like you.

The 2023 Plunge was a record-breaking year. Our plunge week started on January 27-28 with 61 Super Plungers, 21 of whom were Special Olympics athletes (Note: Super Plungers plunge 1x per hour for 24 hours, 24 plunges). This was the largest group of Super Plungers ever and they set the tone for the rest of the week by raising single-year record of $625,943. We then had 5,682 students kick off a busy three-day festival of inclusive plunging as they raised $681,432 at the Cool Schools Plunge. They are our future…building a UNIFIED generation. On Friday, the Police Plunge had a record number of First Responders who Plunged and raised $302,030 exceeding the $300k goal we set with them. The Corporate Plunge also brought out a record number of teams and Plungers which produced $511,802 to support our athletes. On Saturday, February 4, 2023, we had 3,370 plungers and the Maryland Plunge raised $999,206. In addition, we raised $385,000 in sponsorship support from corporate partners and we also raised $67,402 through a series of telethons on WBAL TV 11.

We are so proud of our athlete ambassadors and Plunge Team Captains. They were excited to greet Governor Moore and Lt. Governor Miller upon their arrival on Saturday. It is an experience that they will remember and talk about for the rest of their lives. Upon completing the plunge, while making his way to out of the Bay, with athletes Annu Singleton and Adam Hays at his side, the Governor declared, “We did it!” as he high-fived Lt. Governor Miller. “We did it”…sums up the inclusive experience that our athletes inspired for the Governor, Lt. Governor, and everyone who plunged and witnessed the plunge. The onsite engagement of our athletes at the Plunge provided so much energy, starting with the Super Plunge and wrapping up with Team Owen United at our 3:00 Plunge on Saturday.  Our Plunge is truly a Unified Experience that significantly impacts the lives of our athletes while simultaneously transforming the lives of everyone at the Plunge who had the privilege to interact with them.

In addition to Plunge, we’re off to a great start in our first quarter of the year. Check out these links to get a feel for how we are impacting thousands of lives through sport, health, and leadership.

This series of events and activity demonstrates exactly what it means to build interactive inclusive communities of dignity and respect. Through Sport…and the Plunge, we are proud of our collective, collaborative efforts that are helping create a world where opportunity is not limited by disability.
